Lost Puppy

I was amazed when the woman I had met an hour ago called me. “I wanted to tell you what happened with the lost puppy!”

There is a one-mile path around a pond in our neighborhood. I walk there frequently, a ten-minute walk from my house on the busiest street in our neighborhood. One day, on my way home, a young German Shepherd-type dog darted across the street. The dog was frantic, and there seemed to be no owner for it, but it had a handsome collar. I was worried it might get hit by a car.  Whenever I find a lost dog, I always want to help it. I called it, and being a puppy, it cheerfully bounded toward me. Then it followed me home. I prayed, “What will I do with this puppy now, God? He needs to get back home, but he has no ID on his collar.” While praying, I grabbed my old dog leash in the garage and thought Maybe it can take me where it needs to go. He led me a couple of blocks toward the pond, and took me straight to a house. He was so excited. Before I rang the bell, the dogs started barking wildly. The dog on my leash started whining. I thought, All the dogs are talking to each other. I hope this is where it belongs.

I rang the doorbell and a woman peeked out through a crack in the door. “What can I do for you?”

“I was wondering if this is your dog?” She shook her head. “Well, if this isn’t your dog, do you know anyone who has a dog like this?” Her son came to the door and opened it.

“I see you have dogs. I found this dog, and I’m looking for his owner. The problem is, I have a husband who’s very allergic to dogs, and I can’t take him to my house. Would you be willing to take it and see if you can find its owner?”

“Hey Mom, what do you think?”

At that moment, the young man’s girlfriend walked to the door. “I can get an ad on the internet right now, and surely someone will see it. I think we can take the dog.” She latched onto her boyfriend’s arm, “What do you think?” All seemed in agreement and we exchanged phone numbers.

“Okay God, that was great. Thank you!”  and I walked ten minutes back home.

I received a phone call from the woman who had met me at the door. “I’ve got to tell you what happened! We got the ad on the internet, and then my son and his girlfriend went for a walk around the pond. A young man ran up to them and asked if they had seen a lost dog. He described the dog you left here! The reunion between the dog and the young man was so touching. He was in tears because in six hours he was leaving for boot camp.”
