Grateful or Thankful?

One day I wondered if there is a difference between thinking thanks and feeling gratitude. I’ve wondered if you have the same thought. Someone’s kind deed or thought resonates in our emotions. There is a small distinction between the words. In giving thanks, there is no intention of equal reciprocation. Neither the giver nor the receiver has any expectations. The gift, thought, or act is simply given and received.

To be grateful means that the receiver experiences a heartfelt emotion. Being grateful is the response which intends to reciprocate gratitude to the greater community. It is an answer for our warm feelings and demonstrates appreciation. The new term for this in secular language is ‘pay it forward.’ Here, intention is at the forefront. It implies finding a deed or a payment to others for what another may have done for us.

Gratitude emotes a response that comes from our hearts. It suggests an emotional tie to caring about others. Both the giver and receiver are blessed. Gratitude intends to reciprocate God’s abundant care.
When we are grateful to God for his generous blessings, God rejoices. Gratitude unmistakably blesses God and us, and we are humbled. We appreciate God’s love and the love God sends us through others.
We generally understand the distinction between being thankful and being grateful. Intuitively we know, “Will I give back in the same way?” If not, then we will say, “Thank you!” When we sense that we will reciprocate, or give back in some way, we express our sincere appreciation for the gift, thought, or act by saying, “I’m so grateful.” Gratitude-love will go forward as God reveals to us what we should do, for him and for others.

We do differentiate language in the use of the words, “thank you” or “I am grateful. Most often the usage matches our intentions. You will notice that you already know how to make distinctions.
