Finding Self was a wonderful book. I was impressed with the way Gaynelle’s mind works. Though the book has difficult parts, it was touching and difficult to put down. I know it expresses a lifetime of reflection and serious thought in order to complete. She wrote the book for others to understand and provide insights for our benefit. No one has a perfect upbringing; it’s good to gain an understanding of what’s going on inside of us so we can change.

I like reading biographies and memoirs and knowing how people live their lives. I like to know their backgrounds and how their families and circumstances influence their personalities and character. Gaynelle Gooch’s memoir, Finding Self, gave me insight into how early childhood trauma can affect a person’s whole life. Her story and struggles moved me deeply, and gave me insight into how trauma can affect a person’s response to life. Gaynelle looked like a normal and privlileged girl growing up in Southern California, but her exterior belied terrible secrets that kept her on pins and needles and prevented her from developing healthy relationships. Gaynelle explains how stressful experiences affect the brain and cause unusual responses to everyday experiences. She realized she was different from many people and struggled to overcome her difficulties. Gaynelle’s story moved and enlighten me, and helped me understand my own psychology better.

“Finding Self” was the perfect title for this book, with detailed incidents from a life that was seeking a release from pain and depression, based mainly on horrific events from her childhood. Most of the events were buried in time and only revealed after a long search for answers.
I found the writing just excellent, and the chapter prefaces so good that they invite you into the next chapter. The book was hard to put down. Something else that impressed me was the research and amount of time spent in the study of brain science and psychology, as well as a background of Seminary study. Being drawn into studying the Bible, the writer took on the practice of prayer and found great help from a source which she previously didn’t know existed.
Also, the pages of “Suggested Reading” at the end of the book are excellent and diverse, and the quotes taken from many of these sources are well chosen. It added much to the quality of the writing, something I particularly appreciated. This was so much more than a journal. This author has shown that she is a lifetime learner, and the amount of information in the text seems to have taken a life to learn.
I thoroughly recommend!

This book is an in-depth account of the Author’s early life through adulthood. The depth of sharing is both brave and courageous. I felt incredible empathy learning of the struggles and various forms of abuse she experienced from not only the outside world, but within her own family. What I found inspirational was how the Author embraced her faith and belief in God thru these turbulent times.
Her convictions brought light and understanding about what so many people endure. She offers another way, hope and a path to living a purposeful life. Ms. Gooch’s style of writing is concise, very descriptive and is easy to read because of the way she has structured her words. They are all carefully chosen and the book just flows along.
There are plenty of resources mentioned and listed to offer support, help and most of all….the fact that one is never alone.
